A rare hereditary disease- Marfan’s Syndrome was the impending cause of heart failure in a 60 year old patient. Critical management with 48hours was vital for the survival. Patient’s life was saved by a complicated cardiac procedure, thanks to Dr. Sameet Pathak at Wockhardt Hospital, Nagpur.
Marfans Syndrome is a hereditary disorder which affects the connective tissue that supports all organs. Patients of Marfan’s syndrome are usually tall and thin with disproportionately long arms, fingers and toes. Most of the patients’ suffer fatal heart conditions especially in the blood vessels architecture and structures which finally leads to their demise.
A 60 year old patient from Amaravati was diagnosed with rare heart defect called aortic dissection (split aorta) in which the aorta the main blood vessel from the heart gets split into a two barrel tube. The patient started complaining of chest pain. On examination the patients’ blood pressure had dropped and all vital organs such as kidney and brain were affected. Dr Sameet Pathak a Cardiovascular thoracic surgeon at Wockhardt Hospital Nagpur decided that the only way to save the patient’s life would be to perform a surgery. During the surgery Dr Pathak found that the aorta had split due to weakening of the connective tissues. A procedure called Bentall surgery was carried out where the aorta was replaced by a polyester tube and the damaged aortic valve with an artificial valve. Coronary arteries of the heart vessels on both sides of the polyester tube were joined. The surgery was complicated and lasted for 8 hours and was risky. Another unique feature of the case was that the chest of the patient was not closed and was observed for bleeding. Thereafter the chest was closed the next day and patient was shifted to intensive care unit. Patient started to recover and within 5 days after being admitted in the ICU , the patient was on his feet. Dr Pathak has advised that the patient should be on lifelong blood pressure medication, as a high blood pressure could be detrimental. Low salt diet is also essential to maintain the blood pressure as well. The patient was very grateful to the immediate action taken by Dr Pathak and cardiac team at Wockhardt Hospital, Nagpur.
