Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgery is rarely done in Mumbai but it is widely known to
overall in the world. Minimal Invasive Surgery is a newer form of heart surgery
in India. It is a relatively new and advanced technique of performing coronary
bypass for the treatment of coronary heart diseases. That means instead of
"cutting open the chest" from midline as they do with traditional
open heart surgery, surgery is done through small and cosmetic incisions using
specialized instruments.
Some
Common Indications of the minimal invasive cardiac surgery include
• Coronary artery disease - Minimallyinvasive coronary artery bypass
• Cardiac rhythm disorders- Minimally
invasive atrial fibrillation ablation
• Mitral valve disease- Minimally
invasive mitral valve replacement/repair
• Aortic valve disease- Minimally
invasive aortic valve replacement/repair.
• Congenital cardiac disease
• Removal of cardiac tumours
A
team lead by Dr. Mangesh Kohale, Cardio Thoriac Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospital,
SOBO performed a minimal invasive surgery for 2 patients; 65-year-old Ms Ridhhi
Shah (Name Changed) and 56-year-old Mr. Ganesh Tare (Name Changed). Wockhardt hospital shares these impressive
stories highlighting the advantages in this new cardiac surgery technique.
Ms.
Riddhi Shah was complaining of breathlessness since some time. She had to carry out a 2d echo which revealed a
mitral valve disease and was advised valve replacement surgery as treatment. At
the Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central Dr Mangesh Kohale and team performed
minimal invasive mitral valve replacement surgery with a 6cm small incision
below right side of the chest. The
surgery was successful and patient recovered to have a better quality of life.
The
number of elderly patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) and
valve replacement continue to increase. Minimal Invasive surgery is not for
each and every patient; one has to be very choosey while selecting the patient
as there is a very small area to look inside heart and carrying out the
procedure. Selection of patient is most important in all cases. As of now
15-20% routine surgery patients can be done with minimal invasive surgery ,
however this surgical option is on the rise due to the patients’ now being
aware of its advantages vis a vi
conventional heart surgery.
In
another successful case, 56-year-old Mr.
Ganesh Tare (Name Changed) had a severe chest pain from last 2 months and
critical 90% blockage of main artery. Similarly, Dr Kohale performed minimal
invasive bypass surgery from left side of the chest with 6cm incision. Mr Tare
recovered and his surgery was very effective in the removing the blockage
preventing further complications.
According
, to Dr Mangesh Kohale, Cardio Thoriac
Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospital Mumbai Central Minimally Invasive CardiacSurgery has several advantages over the traditional technique such as the fact
that no bones are cut. It has advantages
in reducing pain, and a patient can go back to normal life including driving or
other activities, blood loss is almost negligible eliminating blood transfusion
in most cases and eliminating blood borne infection. This makes the procedure
ideal in diabetics and older patients who have poor resistance to infection.
Also being unlike the invasive surgery the incision is small around 5 to 6 cm,
making it more cosmetic for the patient.
The
best part is that all the coronary artery blocks irrespective of their location
in the heart can be bypassed in a safe and predictable manner. Another major
advantage is that due to it being less
invasive patients has a very short hospitalization stay with quicker recovery
which is beneficial to patients and hospital.
Both
Mr. Ganesh Tare and Mrs Riddhi Shah expressed, “We are very impressed with the
new type of cardiac surgery at Wockhardt Hospital. We are back to our routine
life with less pain and definitely will have a better quality of life in. We
are thankful to Dr. Mangesh who explained to us the procedure and made us
understand pro and cons of surgery and its overall advantages as compared to
the routine cardiac surgery.”
